A Matter of Ethics:
Hold the Sugar
Suppose you are developing a new low-sugar doughnut. the new doughnut is designed to attract dieters and diabetics. A regular, glazed doughnut has 10 grams of sugar and 200 calories. More than half of the calories come from the 12 grams of fat.
Fast food makers are introducing lower calorie products because of the changing diet trends. In addition, consumers have filed lawsuits in which they claim that their health has been adversely affected by foods that are high in fat and sugar.
In 2004, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation that would ban lawsuits seeking damages because fast food caused weight gain or health problems resulting in obesity. Proponents of the so called cheeseburger bill argue that such lawsuits are frivilous and ignore personal responsibility for healthy eating. Opponents of the bill argue that the fast food industry should not be given federal protection from such lawsuits.
In a response of at least 5 sentences, answer the following question. Do you think that companies should be immune from lawsuits over their food content? Why or why not?

Yes because its your own personal responsibility to maintain your own personal health. It is not a need to go out everyday to a fastfood restaurant and order a cheeseburger. No matter how many lawsuits are filed against those companies it's always going to the the accusers fault because they not looking out for their best interests. And now restaurants are trying to help out the consumer with diet products that are more healthier than the average food their serve. So they are even looking out for your best interests.

I think for the most part they should be immunune because the consumers should be more aware of the foods they are eating. However, the company should make the nutritional facts about their product clearly available so the consumer is aware of what exactly they are getting themselves into. If a company does not make all this information available along with the option to find out more, then they can be put up for a lawsuit. Consumers should have all the necessary information available to them so that they know what they are eating in order to maintain their health. But, a consumer should be aware of their own health enough to maintain healthy eating habits on their own.

I think that the whole idea of suing a fast food restaurant is ridiculous. You have the choice to buy the food or not, so you shouldn't sue the company for your choices. That would be like suing a scary movie for scaring you. The companies should be immune to these types of law suits because they are pointless.Fast food restaraunts should give nutritional information though.

I believe companies are not responsible for their food and its contents to a degree. For example, if a serving of food has a lethal amount of salt or caffeine, then of course the company should be responsible for their product. Fast food may cause weight gain and health problems, but it is all a matter of eating in moderation on the consumer's part. The fast food companies should be immune to lawsuits because they are not responsible for the eating habits of the consumer. The consumer should be more informed about the foods they eat and take ownership of their dietary issues, instead of putting the blame on fast food companies.
The customer makes the choice of what they are going to buy. Fast food places should be allowed to sell what they want. The customer must make the choice as to if they are going to choose a healthy item off the menu. The restaurants and fast food places should not have to follow such laws because their customers are making the wrong choices.

I think that companies should not be immune from law suits. If you are making a product that can harm someone's health, then why make it anyways? You want to attract customers not lost them. You want to make a product that also taste good but also is good for you. If you do make a harmful food product, at least make sure you tell the consumers what they are getting into to. If you warn them ahead of time then it isnt your fault. But it is your fault if you don't warn them and they become obese because of it. Thus, lawsuits should be filed against companies who do not warn their consumers what they are digesting ahead of time.

Yes I think they should be immune because the consumer consuming the food should know better. Its not the companys fault that there are irresponsbile people who dont know how to take care of them selves. The companys provide information on how many calories, or sugar, or etc an item on the menu has. If you honestly care about your health you should ask to see the information then choose wheter or not you want to eat it. Consumers Think smarter!!

I don't think that companies should be immuned to lawsuits. Even though customers should know how to maintain a healthy diet. There are times when there is really a problem that it's more than just gaining pounds. Having the government ban lawsuits would automatically give the fast food companies be immuned to other problems that they may be accused for. Customers should still practice better diet and have a better healthy life.

I think that companies should be immune from lawsuits because they are not forcing the customers to eat their product. When a company makes their products and it a very good in selling wise, then they are goint to sell it evern more. Some companies are making low calorie products so customers wont complain. Also no one is telling these customers to eat their products everyday. So that is why i think that companies should be immune to lawsuits.

Yes ,The companies should be immune to the lawsuit over their food content so they can actually care about our health and not about how much money they are making. It is said now that teenagers are dienin BEFORE their parents now because of weight gain or health problems due to fast food restuarants and food product that are being selled. They add to much sugar on a small piece of chocolate bar that contains like 300 calories or more. Us as the costumers should have all the necessary information available to us so that we know what we are eating in order to maintain our health.

I don't think that they should be immuned to it because i think that you should choose what you like to eat, if its fatty or healthy . i think they just try and get money out of people so they can take control over things and market what THEY want people to market . i dont think it should be anyones resonsibility for what you choose to eat .

Yes,I think companies should be immune over lawsuits. It will help other people to go out more to buy the things they love the most. If they make doughnuts that are low-sugar. Diabetics would have the opportunity to eat more sugarless foods than usual, because most foods are filled with sugar and that is really harmful for both dieters and diabetics.
I think that the company shouldnt be held responsible for their food contents. They are simply doing their jobs, which is putting the product out there and trying to make a profit. I think it is the consumers responsibility to find out more about the product and watch how they eat and watch their weight and go to the doctor to make sure everything is ok with their health. If they are the ones overeating they cant blame it on the company because they were doing their jobs. They should be immune to the lawsuits because they were simply doing their jobs and trying to make their profit, and it is the consumers fault for not taking care of themselves.

Companies should be immune from lawsuits over their food because nobody forces people to eat their food. The consumer should be aware of what they consume and know the consequences. They should know that the food contains alot of calories
Alex Aram..
People have the right to choose what they want to eat. If people want to complain what about they ate, first they should ind out what it is they're eating. The companies should also tell facts to consumers that they know they'd want to hear. Companies and people together are responsible for maintain healthy foods and environments
I believe that food companies are aware of the type of food they are producing and the contents. Along witht that those who buy the product are aware of the effects. Both are not innocent however the it is the consumer who decided to eat it. Companies should be used that someone is going to blame them for the consumtion of the product and the results.
