New Verizon Ads Take Direct Aim at IPhone, but What Are They Selling?

You are currently learning about product and service positioning.  The short commercial below is a Verizon advertisement taking direct aim at the IPhone.  Watch the short commercial and read the article from Advertising Age discussing the commercial.

Whatever rumors were brewing a few months ago that Apple would break its exclusivity with AT&T and take its iPhone to other carriers, it's a good bet they can be put to bed for now
Less than two weeks after Verizon Wireless aired a TV commercial that takes aim at AT&T's network service, it's now going straight for the iPhone. The teaser campaign, which plugs the new Android device and debuted Saturday night during the playoff game between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels, is, however, causing some head-scratching.
In the campaign, Verizon seeks to slam Apple's iconic smartphone on all the things it's perceived to fall short on, such as a lack of a physical keyboard and the capability to run multiple third-party apps simultaneously. In a play on the iPhone's "I," the campaign takes jabs at the handset with a series of "iDon'ts," starting with "iDon't have a real keyboard," "iDon't run simultaneous apps." The commercial ends with "Everything iDon't ... Droid does. November."
Yet the brand being advertised is ambiguous. "There's no summary about the product, and you don't know who the brand is," said Karl Barnhart, managing director and partner at CoreBrand. "It's clever, but you have no idea what this is for."
The campaign, from McGarry Bowen, New York, also has a companion microsite that lets users sign up for updates about the handset's release. But the site's language is equally esoteric: "Do you wish you had a robot sidekick that moved at light speed and lived in your pocket? Input your e-mail and Droid will notify you when compromise has been deactivated."
Unclear target

If the product and its message are crafted for a geeky and tech-savvy audience, though, the media buy is so far suggesting otherwise. Given how deep the commercial drills into the ways the iPhone falls short, experts said the messaging would mainly resonate with those in the deep know about the handset's capabilities, which excludes the vast majority of people, iPhone owners included. These folks aren't reading blogs about the latest and greatest smartphones, they said. Yet Verizon's broadcasting of the message to viewers of a baseball playoff suggests the No. 1 wireless carrier wants to stir anticipation among a mainstream audience.
"It's unclear who they're aiming this campaign at," said Rene Ritchie, editor of The iPhone blog. "A lot of this is inside baseball, and seems to target people with particular pain points with the iPhone." Mr. Ritchie said he conducted an informal survey among those who don't keep up with the latest handset news and development, and found that they had no idea what product the commercial was pitching.
Mr. Ritchie also said that people who like the iPhone want a well-designed, sleek and subtle phone, not the slider phone that Verizon is promoting. The handset is made by Motorola, and pictures of it have leaked on the internet.
Regardless, Roger Entner, senior VP at Nielsen who looks after the telecom industry, said when vendors take on the iPhone head-on, the device had better live up to its claims and all the ballyhoo. "We've seen the Samsung Instinct try to bash the iPhone, but it didn't attract new customers," he said.
Still, some experts say Verizon did right by going after AT&T and the iPhone. "It's found a way to attack both sides of the story," said Andrei Jezierski, partner at marketing consultancy i2Partners. Referring to Verizon Wireless' push parodying the iPhone's "There's an app for that" campaign, which shows a map of Verizon's dense coverage area compared to AT&T's, Mr. Jezierski said, "Anytime you bash the iPhone, it's a great way to get attention, and 'There's a map for that' is a way for them to keep beating on the 'It's the network, stupid' message." Indeed, on YouTube, the Android spot has garnered more than 1,000 comments, with some anticipating the handset, and others defending the iPhone.
Verizon's latest move is a bet that Android can put some heat on the iPhone and help the carrier create some distance between it and top challenger AT&T. "AT&T is [perceived as] No. 1, with the iPhone success," Mr. Barnhart said. "Verizon must go right at them to keep their size advantage. And with AT&T's network and coverage issues, now is the perfect time to do it."

In a 5 sentence reaction, discuss the following:  How do you feel about positioning a product directly against the competition.  What do you think of the commercial?  Is it good or bad for Verizon?  Why?  How about the IPhone?

I feel that this campaign is good for Verizon. Coming out with a new phone that has all the capabilities as the iPhone plus more is excatly what Verizon needs to show that they are still on top. Also, putting themselves directly against the iPhone is helping them as well. They are showing all these new features that their new phone can have and comparing it to the iPhone which shows they will have the same features only better. This campaign and new product could save Verizon from the iPhone and keep people from switching out of Verizon's network to get the iPhone.

I think that the commercial was interesting. I thought of the iPhone right away by the way they showed "iDon't..." . So, most people know instantly that they're aiming for the Apple iPhone. I feel that they directly compared it to the iPhone, basically, because the iPhone is like the alpha-"phone" out there. I don't really think it was that good of a commercial since it didn't really say what company it was from. It just left us with the curiousity of wanting to know what this product is like "Is it a phone or can it do so much more?". I think it's bad for the iPhone since it's pointing out all the negative features that it has and people might start to realize that this so-called smart phone that almost everyone is crazy about isn't that great after all.

i feel that postioning the product directly towards the competition is a smart idea. It makes you look tough and confident. I think the commercial was great, and i hope verizon can back up what they're offering. It was good thing what verizon did because they have caught the attention of numerous people. Not only did they call out at&t they called out Iphone so yeah verizon looks strong and ready to compete i wish the company the best.!

I think it was a good and bad idea to put the driod on competition with the iphone. If it does what it says the iphone doesn't it could be succesful and if it doesn't furfill it's promises than it just boosts the iphones popularity. They commercial was good because it took apple's theme (blank background and black text) advertisements and made people think that it's apple so they'll watch it and the music was lively and catchy so they most likely want to listen to it. The iphone owners will probably either take this seriously and have to create something better or take this as someone is "trying" to be like us but won't succed.

I think that bussinesses should not directly find all the faults and use one companies mark (I) against them. Even though it is changed to Idon't when hearing I it reminds you of the Iphone. The commerical does not really adveritse Verizons product. There is no visual reference to ad, simply saying what it can do better. Which could negatively affect Verizon, the image of the phone will make it sell or not. Having a producted hyped with the possibilty it's not visually liked can create some disloyalty. For the Iphone it bluntly tell Apple what we offer and this is how you suck, which give them an a hint "If you want to stay in the game work on this."

I think that Verizon's ads are very well done. When you compare your product to another product and it is much better, you're stealing their customers and attracting new ones. I think it's about time someone slammed Apple for once too. Apple is always slamming other companies, especially Microsoft, and I think that Verizon is great for showing them that they can fight too. I think this will attract many frustrated iPhone users and people who can't stand iPhones, like me.

I think the commercial should have given at least what the Droid looks like. This is definitely bad for the iphone because it attracts the attention of Verizon over AT&T. I think this is especially bad for AT&T because most people say Verizon is better only AT&T has the iphone. Now that Verizon has something like it, if not better. Things will not look too good for AT&T. This is very good for Verizon because it really grabs the consumers attention.

I think that the compeition between AT&T and Apple is really starting to heat up. Before I read this article. I didn't know that those two companies were in compeition. I also thought it was AT&T against Sprint or Teen Mobile because AT&S's old commericals were of a guy in a blue shirt labeled AT&T who would always out smart four other characters who symoled the other phone companies. This video shows us all of the things the iPhone can not do. For one thing it said '' I dont have a keyboard'' Well the Droid has the screen of an iPhone but you can slide the screen to reveal a keyboard. At the end of the commerical, it showed us a blurry picture of something and I am guessing it was suppose to be the Droid. The Droid has not been released yet but pictures of the new phone have been leaking on the internet. The droid is suppose to come out in Novemeber and then we'll see which phone dose Amercia like better.

I think the commercial was very good but lacked in tell what it was promoting. Also i think this is good for verison because now they have something that will match up to the iphone. I think that this was a bad commercial for verison because this phone has to be better than the iphone to sell real good. If this phone is really good then alot of people will maybe switch to verison than to at&t. It is bad for at&t because now they have something that will maybe match up to the iphone that they made. Also If this phone is good it will take away alot of their customers and sprint and t-mobiles cutomers.

The commercial is appealing and easily catches the audience's attention. But it leaves the viewer with questions like 'What is this product?' and 'Who is selling it?'. The commercial does not air a picture of the product, the price of it, or even the Verizon logo. It leaves the viewer assuming that it is a phone, which some people may not understand when they are watching this commercial. What it does air, however, is the site for the phone, but only for a brief seconds. On Verizon's part, the commercial was a good competition motive to slam the popular iPhone in order to gain the customer's attention. The commercial also points out disadvantages to the competitor's product that even iPhone users may have missed. Overall, I think the Verizon ad did its job in capturing the audience's attention, but could add more information.

I think its a bad idea, because many people would try to buy those kinds of phones and see how it is.
The commercial was good, but for people who are picky about choosing phones wouldn't really like it. Many people might see the commercial and like it so, they would go to buy it and might not like it.

The commercial is a smart idea but the only thing is that we don't get to see how the verizon phone looks like. This can be a good thing though because it builds suspense in peoples' minds and that would make some of them eager to buy it. The commercial points out some of the features that the iphone doesn't have which apparently, the smart phone contains. That can make alot of people prefer the verizon phone more than the iphone. Also, people are waiting to see what comes next after the iphone and i think the verizon phone could be the next big deal.

I feel that positioning a product directly against the competition is a good thing, ONLY IF your product is better in some way or another. This way, people can learn about what makes this product stand out from the others. I think that this commercial is very good in terms of what their product has that the iPhone doesn't, but in the sense of promoting their product it is not very informational at all. If they could make it more about their product and show some images, then it would be a great commercial. This is a good thing for Verizon, because it shows the ways that the Android phone is better than the iPhone. On the other hand, it is considered a bad thing for AT&T, because basically their product is being outplayed.

Positioning a product directly against the competition is not so good of an idea because they are just making even more competition to themselves. The commercial is really interesting. It is a god campaign for Verizon because now, they might me better than AT&T.

At first i thought it was an iPhone commercial until i saw the ending and reread the blog . It's a really good commercial since they are keeping it short&simple for the new cellphone coming out . It's letting the consumers know the features and things that it has that are better than the iphone. Even though my network isn't verizon i feel that at the end of the commercial ; should've been better actually showing the phone . But it's good that they didn't go overboard like other companies do.

I think this was a really good idea for Verizon. The idea of the iPhone having all this new stuff and even more ideas that arent listed really interests me. Which also means that there will be a lot of other people interested in this product too. This product makes it where people dont feel that they have to switch out of their company to get the iPhone because now they will have it in their company and have even more features to add to it.
